Our Mission
09/15/06: Update:
After much reflection on what I wanted the blog to be about, I have decided to expand the topic somewhat. I had originally envisioned a site that would highlight both good and bad examples of corporate behavior that exemplifies Catholic social teachings. It has tended to be more bad examples than good. Like when we were in school; you don’t hear about the kid that is good all day but you sure hear about the trouble maker. I will still include these type of observations when they occur but I will also be highlighting things that I run across that we all as Catholics can benefit from. For example, the previous post on “How to be a Better Catholic”. I hope that this will make this site more useful to readers and help to promote a more positive view of our faith; what it can help us to accomplish rather than what it “forbids” us from doing.
The Catholic Family Campaign encourages corporations to support 5 key principles.
1. Marriage is a fundamental institution between one man and one woman. As such, corporate benefit packages should reflect and support this societal norm. Corporations should abstain from supporting efforts promoting the recognition of relationships other than between a man and a woman as equal to a valid marriage. CFC encourages to corporations to refrain from advertising in media that supports or encourages the depiction of the homosexual lifestyle as part of the mainstream.
2. Every life- from conception to natural death is deserving of respect and dignity. As such, support of abortion services and organizations supporting abortion activities should be avoided by corporate organizations. As an alternative, CFC encourages an expansion of efforts by corporate citizens to support adoption as a viable alternative to abortion. CFC encourages the inclusion of benefits that support the dignity of the patient during end of life care. These would include long-term care, home health care and hospice care.
3. Catholic Family Campaign believes that everyone human being deserve to be treated with dignity and paid a living wage for the fruits of their efforts. To this end, we encourage corporation to provide fair employment with a living wage and benefits to all employees, and to source products only from suppliers who adhere to these same principles. CFC supports efforts and legislation to encourage this type of behavior from its corporate citizens. Impacts to individual employees should be taken into account and minimized as part of any merger and/or out-sourcing activities.
4. Catholic Family Campaign believes in respect for religious freedoms and encourages corporations to respect these fundamental rights in the workplace. CFC encourages employers to respect the diversity of values when developing employee benefit and incentive programs. Employees have the right to benefit options that do not conflict with their personal religious and moral values. Further more, employees have the right to decline task which conflict with their moral and religious values. Corporations must make reasonable accommodations where such conflicts exist.
5. Catholic Family Campaign supports open communication in the workplace and respects the rights of workers to respectfully disagree with the principles and values exhibited by the corporation. As such, CFC request that all corporations have communication mechanisms that allow employees to express a diversity of opinions without the fear of reprisal. To that end, CFC will act to facilitate communication with corporate management when the fear of reprisal.
