University of St. Thomas for Canceling Pro-Abortion Speaker

The Cardinal Newman Society today praised President Robert Ivany for not allowing a pro-abortion Latino leader to speak on campus. Huerta had been invited to help launch the Latin American and Latino Studies program.

Dr. Ivany told the Houston Chronicle he was “saddened by her prominent and outspoken advocacy of abortion as an option.”

This is a great story to read after so many Catholic colleges have invited speakers to campus who promote positions that are contrary to Church teaching. T
he University of St. Thomas has shown itself to be an admirable Catholic institution.

Human Cost of Chocolate

CNN has a story on the labor conditions that exist for those who work to harvest cocoa beans in West Africa.  Many of the workers are under age.  The article states that the industry agreed to wean itself from child labor but that little progress has been made in over 7 years.

I wanted to share this one picture from the story as it really made me think.  This seven year old boy does not go to school.  Instead he works in his uncles cocoa grove.  I am not sure if the photographer was trying to make a point but I think that the boy’s t-shirt speaks for itself…..

Priests becoming too worldly

A Vatican prelate stated recently that priest are becoming less obedient to the church and more responsive to the world.  I guess that question would be “why?”.  Many of the comments to the article at Catholic World News reflect the reality that many priest today and thrust into a role of parish manager and fund raiser.  One writer laments that they rarely pray the Rosary with them before Mass or attend Eucharistic Adoration.

This statement applies to Catholics in general.  How often do each of us go to Eucharistic Adoration or to a Holy Hour?  We expect our Priest and Religious to attend and participate in these things but do we expect the same from ourselves or our friends and family?

Here is a thought!  How about each of us saying a family rosary or going to a daily Mass for the intentions of our parish Priest?  Maybe we should show up for the Rosary that is being said before Mass instead of rushing into our seats at the end of it.

No idle talk

Archbishop says he will close Catholic Charities rather than compromise Church teaching

Though Colorado Catholic Charities “does not proselytize,” said Chaput, it also “has no interest at all in generic do-goodism; on the contrary, it’s an arm of Catholic social ministry. When it can no longer have the freedom it needs to be
‘Catholic,’ it will end its services.

“This is not idle talk. I am very serious,”

This is a great article that is posted over at The Catholic Association website. Check it out today and forward to all your Catholic friends.
