In a Show of Unity, Sixty Groups Ask Congress To Block Planned Parenthood Funding

Here is a copy of the letter sent to each United States Senator and Congressman asking them to stop the Federal funding of Planned Parenthood.  Let’s hope that they listen! (more)

October 24, 2007

The Honorable NAME
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator,

In light of recent revelations of Planned Parenthood’s alleged systematic violation of state laws in Kansas, the undersigned organizations request the immediate suspension of Planned Parenthood’s federal funding until it can be determined whether the organization violated state and/or federal laws.

According to the 107-count complaint filed in Kansas’ Johnson County District Court last week, Planned Parenthood purposefully performed illegal late term abortions in violation of Kansas State law and unlawfully falsified documents in order to conceal that fact. They are also accused of failing to comply with the required medical reporting guidelines.

The complaint alleges 29 misdemeanor counts of performing “unlawful late term abortions,” 29 misdemeanor counts of “unlawful failure to determine viability for late term abortion,” 23 felony counts of “making false information,” and 27 misdemeanor counts of “unlawful failure to maintain records.”

Planned Parenthood operates around 860 facilities around the country, and there are approximately 40 states with laws banning late term abortions. This illegal conduct may be happening all over the country.

While Planned Parenthood claims that it does not perform late-term abortions after 22 weeks, the charges were reviewed by a Johnson County, Kansas district judge who found probable cause. These are substantive charges levied against Planned Parenthood. States have passed laws on late-term abortions because they are detrimental to women as well as babies. Women are often not informed that late-term abortions increase the likelihood of severe blood loss, damage to vital organs, later premature births and loss of fertility.

We urge you to act to ensure that our tax dollars are not subsidizing abortion clinics that perform possibly illegal late-term abortions.

Sincerely,

Task Force to Probe How Abortion Hurts Women

Governor Matt Blunt has put together the Governor’s Task Force on the Impact of Abortion on Women at a time when abortion advocates say abortion benefits women.

“This is a very informal group of good people who believe in advancing the cause of life and believe that we should minimize the impact of abortion on society”

Leaders of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, the nation’s largest network of women and men testifying to the harm they’ve endured from abortion, praised Blunt.

“The evidence for the devastation wrought by abortion is everywhere,” said Georgette Forney, co-founder of the group who had an abortion when she was 17.

The Tide is turning!

Here, here and here are a couple of stories at Life News that indicate that the tide continues to move in the direction of a pro-life America.  Recent polls show that a majority are pro-life when it comes to abortion and over half of the public opposes most or all abortions.  Also, a recent poll shows that 45% of Americans need to know a candidate’s position on abortion before they vote.  This knowledge is more important to to pro-life voters than those who back legal abortion.

Keep up the hard work and constant stream of prayers!

The Weitz Company Rocky Mountain construction company has refused to reconsider their decision to building the largest abortion facility in the United States.  The Senior Vice President for the company is a member of the Catholic Church and reportedly refused to view documents of Planned Parenthood’s alleged involvement with child rape cover-ups in both Kansas and Indiana.  (from Catholic News Agency)

Italy moved by Teen

“The Eucharist: My Road to Heaven: A Biography of Carlo Acutis” is a new book out that many of us may want to get.  It is about a young man from Italy who died of leukemia at the age of 15.  Through all his trials, Carlo offered his life and suffering for the Church and the Pope.

He had a very unique and mature sense of his faith which truly impacted the way he lived and the generosity of how he treated others.  This sounds like a very good book for all of us to learn something from. (from the Catholic News Agency)

Brownback ends Campaign

Senator Brownback called it quits yesterday and officially ended the campaign.  I think the Senator is a very principled man who would have made a great President and set the country on a path back to the values on which the country was founded.  The amount of money that is needed to wage a national campaign is getting larger every election cycle.  I fear that we are becoming a country where only the very wealthy have the chance to rise to the level of leadership in government.  All of the remaining top tier candidates have basically been running and raising money for years, even though they have only been declared candidates since early this year.

Governor Huckabee seems to be the exception.  He does not have the name recognition of Clinton, Romney or Giuliani but seems to be holding his own.  I hope he is able to stick around long enough for people to get a better idea of where he stands.

The US Bishops are poised to release a statement concerning the involvement of Catholics in the political process.  One of the key points that I am hearing is that it stresses issues such as the dignity of life and encourages Catholics to not become tied to closely to a particular party.  I think that is a key issue to the diminishing clout of  the “Catholic  vote”  It has come down to us being taken for granted as a voting block.  There are those who are always going to vote for the Democrat and those who are always going to vote for the Republican.

I encourage everyone to asks the tough questions, let the candidates know what values are important to you and make them earn your vote.

City of Brotherly Love

Philadelphia has raised the rent on the Boy Scouts’ city headquarter by $199,999 as punishment for the scout policy of barring homosexuals from being scout leaders.  The city council voted to reverse a 1928 ordinance allowing the Council to have it headquarter on public land for $1 a year.  This follows similar actions in San Francisco and Boston.

The real losers in this is the kids who will be impacted by this decision.  This increase is the cost of 30 new Cub Scout packs or the costs of sending 800 kids to camp.  (more)

Filled to overflowing

Here is a great article from the Catholic Spirit about a surge in seminarians at St. John Vianney Seminary in St, Paul, Minnesota. It seems that enrollment has more than doubled in the last 6 years.  Let’s hope this is a sign of things to come and please remember to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
