Knitting to Warm Mongolia

I ran across this site on the web. The Dulaan Project out of Flagstaff, Arizona is a project of Flagstaff International Releif Effort (FIRE). The purpose of the project is to “inspire the generous spirit of the knitting community to help meet the urgent needs of Mongolia’s impoverished people.”

The idea is for those of us (sorry, it does not include me) who knit to make hats, mittens, socks, neck gaitors, scarves and sweaters for all ages from babies to adults. The group will then deliver them to Mongolia to be distributed before Winter.

Warm, well-made clothing can allow a child to go to school or an adult to go to work; restore a sense of dignity; and, in some cases, literally save a life.

Go to the website for more info and get started knitting to day.

where have I been??

I have not posted many messages this month as I have been very busy with Catholic Family Media. This is another blog that I started. As a father of seven, I sometimes struggle with finding good movies that we can watch together as a family. Even some of the cartoons that we pick have language and/or behavior that I find objectional. As a result, I have decided to launch Catholic Family Media. Right now I have a small number of post and reviews about various entertainment options.  I plan to build the selection as time goes on. Stop by the website and let me know what you think. …feel free to sends your friends and family my way also.

Nominations???

OK everyone! Here is your chance to nominate your employer for their good deeds in helping you cope with the high gas prices.

I know last year there were reports of companies offering stipends to help pay for commuting costs. Others were offering more flexible work schedules and telecommuting while still others subsidized public transit for their employees.

Let me know why your employer should be in the hall of fame on this issue.

Blinko.com

Ever have one of those mystery charges show up on your mobile phone bill? I had some on mine from BLINKO. OK, the first time it happened, I thought, “Ok, my son must have bought a ringtone or something”.

Of course he did not remember doing it! I paid the bill, called the 800 number and made sure that I was not subscribed to anything else that would cost me more $$. I did not think anything else about it until a few months later. I had another $9.99 charge on my bill. My phone company could not do anything other than give me the 800 number to call. I bet you will be surprised to learn that the phone number was always busy.

I sent an email to the company from the website; receiving an email response 7 days later. They could cancel my subscription but could not issue me a credit. It is only $10 but I had already paid them about $20 the time before.

To make a long story short, I file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau to get their attention. I had an back within 36 hours and a check was at my home in less than a week.

Just a reminder of how to get the attention of some of these companies.

Where not to send your kid to college….

The Rev. John I. Jenkins, president of the University of Notre Dame, has changed course and decided to allow a gay film festival and the play ‘Vagina Monologues’ on the campus in South Bend, Indiana.

As part of Rev. Jenkins Statement on Academic Freedom and Catholic Character, he has introduced a Common Proposal of Chairs of the College of Arts and Letters.

April 5, 2006

A. Faculty and departments must explore controversial issues. A university has an obligation to promote the free discussion of issues that are controversial in our society. A Catholic university has an added obligation to sponsor academic events that consider controversial issues in the light of Catholic teachings.

B. It is understood that certain presentations are intended to be provocative, and are so with good reason. Chairs, however, must make informed judgments on whether provocative presentations have academic or artistic value, or are gratuitously offensive. While the former may merit sponsorship, the latter do not. In making such judgments all must recognize the special identity of the University of Notre Dame, and take account of associated sensibilities.

C. Departments should act within their disciplinary expertise in sponsoring events. Inter-disciplinary events are encouraged, but there should be some connection between the sponsoring department’s discipline and the primary subject of the event. When inter-disciplinary events are sponsored, departments should seek joint sponsorship with relevant departments.
